Find Your Path...

Vision

Students will be wholly engaged in life, prepared to make choices, empowered to contribute in their communities, and capable of driving their own learning.

Mission

Create an environment where students build trusting relationships with caring adults and participate in the process of maintaining the environment for future students.

Core Values

Create an environment where students build trusting relationships with caring adults and participate in the process of maintaining the environment for future students.

What is Self-Directed?

"Modeled after Sudbury Valley School and inspired by the work of Maria Montessori, an environment where students dig deep into their development and practice the art of making choices and living" "collaboratively with others."

Imagine...

a place where students learn how to approach real problems that are relevant to them, not just in the future, but right now.

Imagine a place where students have the authority to respond to bullying graciously but firmly.

Imagine a place where students develop deep skills in the subject matter they love while they become part of a vibrant community where they aren’t classified by their age, gender, or ability.

…Welcome to Self-Directed Academy

  • Individual Rights

Each individual has the right to be free from manipulation or coercion. No staff member or fellow student will be allowed to exercise power to get students to participate in activities.

  • Individual Responsibilities

Learning and behavior is the responsibility of each individual. Students take responsibility for the school by having influence over how funds are spent and maintained.

  • Equal Empowerment

Every member of the school community has access to the same resources and can speak during meetings where decisions are being made.

  • Community Through Democracy

All students and staff members have the right to advocate for changes in the school from the youngest to the oldest. The entire school will meet regularly to discuss all important decisions and students will have a chance to vote and may also request to chair the meetings from time to time.

  • Trust

The importance of trust between students, between students and staff, between staff and families, and between school and community can’t be overstated. Trust is built on transparency, consistency, and communication.

  • Social Influence

Publishing content about our school is of utmost importance as we seek to affect wider change and adoption of more respectful practices in society and education.
